Illustrated Bible Memory

So how do you teach Bible passages to young children? Let me show you how. The computer has made this easy as pie. Since September I have been teaching my children Psalm 147. I'm just picking and choosing a few verses in there. We aren't memorizing the entire chapter but almost all of it. The children were forever getting the verses mixed up so I made this copy of the verses in Microsoft Word and printed them out on paper; one picture to a page. As they recite the verses I flip to the picture that goes with it. Are you interested in seeing how this works?

Okay here is Psalm 147 in pictures.

Praise ye the Lord for it is good to sing praises unto our God.

He telleth the number of the stars; He calleth them all by their names.

Sing unto the Lord with Thanksgiving;

Sing praise upon the harp unto our God.

Who covereth the heavens with clouds,

Who prepareth rain for the earth,

Who maketh the grass to grow upon the mountains.

He giveth to the beast his food,

And to the young ravens which cry.

He sendeth forth his commandment upon earth;

His Word

runneth very swiftly.

He giveth snow like wool;

He scattereth the hoarfrost like ashes, he casteth forth his ice like morsels;

Who can stand before His cold?

He sendeth out His word and melteth them,
He causes the wind to blow,

and the waters flow.

Great is our Lord,

and of great power.

His understanding is infinite. Psalm 147

The children are having no trouble learning it now. Of course, Peters favorite picture is "He sendeth out His word". Of course that is just down his line! And that little cloud blowing wind should be bigger. I loved him so and when I went to enlarge him in google clip art, lo, he had been removed and you couldn't enlarge it. I just went with the little image in google and then I enlarged it in Word. So on the kids papers it is a big cloud blowing wind.

Peter calls the part where God sends clouds, rain and grass, the rain cycle. He had no problem memorizing that part even before the pictures were done. But my dear little Tink with the processing disorder wasn't helped by trying to recall Peters rain cycle. Of the three children memorizing this she does, however, have it down the best and can recite the most of it even without the pics.

Well I hope you enjoyed this little tutorial. No go make your own and see what you can come up with. If you do I would love to see what you have done. Be sure to link it in the comments here.
